DOMINANT AUSTRALIA LIFTS WORLD CUP FOR FIFTH TIME

Image
There is nothing  Australia  loves more than to strut its stuff in front of its fans. There was no shortage of support as the  MCG , bursting at the seams with a record 93,013 fans in attendance, buzzed with electricity well before the toss. Decked up in their yellow tees and wearing their yellow caps with pride, Australia’s supporters prepared for a capital show from their heroes. They were not to be disappointed. In  Michael Clarke’s  final appearance as a One-Day International player, Australia showed its class, romping to a big win in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.  New Zealand  arrived in  Australia hopeful of becoming the newest first-time champion. But in the space of seven hours on Sunday (March 29), it was emphatically denied.

The Queen of code

You probably don’t know the name Grace Hopper, but you should. As a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, Hopper worked on the first computer, the  Harvard Mark 1.  And she headed the team that  created the first compiler , which led to the creation of COBOL , a programming language that by the year 2000 accounted for 70 percent of all actively used code. Passing away in 1992, she left behind an inimitable legacy as a brilliant programmer and pioneering woman in male-dominated fields. Hopper’s story is told in “The Queen of Code,” directed by  Gillian Jacobs  (of “ Community ” fame). It’s the latest film in FiveThirtyEight’s “ Signals ” series.

Swine flu

Image
All you need to know Swine flu or H1N1 Influenza has created much panic in India, with 700+ people succumbing to the illness and 10,000 people contracting it. But there is no need to worry, the doctors say. It’s just that one needs to be careful and aware of the disease. Here’s all you need to know about the epidemic. What exactly is H1N1 and why is it called swine flu? H1N1 is called swine flu because the virus was similar to influenza viruses that cause illness in pigs. In 2009, H1N1, or swine flu was called a pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO) because of its massive spread across the world. Swine flu (H1N1 and H3N2v influenza virus) facts Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by influenza viruses that infect the respiratory tract of pigs and result in a barking cough, decreased appetite, nasal secretions, and listless behavior; the virus can be transmitted to humans. Swine flu viruses may mutate (change) so that they are easily transmissible among humans. The

History of cricket

Image
The game of  cricket  has a  known  history spanning from the 16th century to the present day, with international matches played since 1844, although the official history of international Test cricket began in 1877. During this time, the game developed from its origins in Enland into a game which is now played professionally in most of the Common Wealth Nations. No one knows when or where cricket began but there is a body of evidence, much of it circumstantial, that strongly suggests the game was devised during Saxon or Normans times by children living in the Weald, an area of dense woodlands and clearings in south-east England that lies across Kent and Sussex. It is generally believed that cricket survived as a children's game for many generations before it was increasingly taken up by adults around the beginning of the 17th century. Possibly cricket was derived from bowls, assuming bowls is the older sport, by the intervention of a batsman trying t

Father of the Computer-Charles Babbage

Image
Charles Babbage ,  (26 December 1791 – 18 October 1871) was an English  polymath .   A mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer, Babbage is best remembered for originating the concept of a programmable computer. Considered a " father of the computer ", Babbage is credited with inventing the first  mechanical computer  that eventually led to more complex designs. His varied work in other fields has led him to be described as "pre-eminent" among the many polymaths of his century. Parts of Babbage's uncompleted mechanisms are on display in the  London Science Museum . In 1991, a perfectly functioning  difference engine  was constructed from Babbage's original plans. Built to  tolerances  achievable in the 19th century, the success of the finished engine indicated that Babbage's machine would have worked.
