Facts and figures of India's first UNESCO heritage city Ahmedabad.
The largest city of Gujarat, Ahmedabad has become the first Indian city to get a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage City tag.

The city of Ahmedabad was founded by Sultan Ahmed Shah during the 15th century. Over the years, the city has witnessed many historical events. Mahatma Gandhi lived here from 1915 to 1930 and this is where he began his freedom struggle. Ahmedabad is home to over
2,600 heritage sites and over 24 Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected monuments and sites. These include examples of Indo-Islamic architecture and art as well as elegantly carved temples.
Ahmedabad is also one of India’s first smart cities.Ahmedabad competed against New Delhi and Mumbai for this title. Apart from Ahmedabad, Paris, Vienna, Cairo, Brussels, Rome, Bhaktapur, Galle and Edinburgh are some of the other heritage cities in the world.
The 5.5 km walled city area with approximate population of four lakh living in century old wooden residences in around 600 pols or neighbourhoods is regarded as living heritage and the UNESCO had preferred Ahmedabad’c entry over Delhi and Mumbai, country’s two main metro cities.

Ahmedabad’s journey towards attaining a world heritage tag began in 1984 when the first study for conserving heritage structures was instituted by Ford Foundation. In March 2011, Ahmedabad made it to Unesco’s tentative list of world heritage sites.
