What is Laughter Yoga?
Laughter yoga was started by Dr Madan Kataria in the mid-1990s. He started a laughter club with four people, with an agenda to promote the importance of laughter. The club quickly grew to over 50 participants within a few days. In no time, there were over 200 laughter clubs throughout India. By 1999, Kataria had travelled to the US and established the first laughter club outside India. Now, a laughter yoga institute offers training programmes, workshops and seminars on therapeutic laughter. Laughter yoga is a unique form of exercise.
It is usually done in groups by sharing jokes and doing playful exercises. People in the group often fake laughter in the beginning until it soon turns into real and contagious laughter. A few breathing exercises that are taught during laughter yoga can be used to relax the body and mind.
